This polar bear is the reason I got the third Pica Pau book. I love the dungarees and the cute little face! I also love the thumbs, not sure why, and I know they’ll appear in some of the other Pica Pau patterns.
New skills
I used a griddle stitch for the first time which was very fun. It’s an alternative single and double crochet, then you change the yarn colour every round.
I also hadn’t made dungarees before, so the straps were new. Stitching them evenly was honestly quite hard. Having them sit evenly and still hold up on the shoulders was tricky.
My experience
I tried to stick to the colours in the original pattern, but misread that you needed off-white for the bear itself instead of using white for the whole thing. An easy mistake! But I also don’t think it’s that obvious so I got away with it.
The dungarees are a clunky fit, which I don’t know if I like or not? The bottoms are tight around the feet and baggy around the leg, but I do like how tall they are on the bear.
It’s the same with a lot of the Pica Pau patterns, but I really like how striped stitches look on these guys. Especially in yarns with high contrast like this blue and white.
If I were to do this again I would make a brown bear instead of a polar bear; I think the white shirt and the white fur could have a more interesting contrast. I also think I could try different colours for the dungarees and the shirt.
